What is 'Simplicity?' Think about John Carpenter's 'The Thing,' and you have an idea. Without spoiling too much, the novel takes the evolutionary motifs of the original and projects them forward to the point of what the characters refer to as 'Simplicity.' I find that this makes the novel feel less grand and awesome though the scale and stakes are greater. Instead, the action comes to George as he passively becomes the object of desire for multiple advanced alien species who want to read the valuable information in his mind. Whereas the original story was modeled after classic epics like the Odyssey and especially Dante's Inferno, the sequel has less of a sense of wandering exploration.

He volunteers yet again to travel to the distant future after written messages start materializing in the 20th Century from a time bridge where a mysterious intelligence awaits one million years hence. World War I veteran and time-traveling guinea pig, George, returns as our main protagonist. Stableford takes this to the extreme in his sequel. Wright brought us along on one of the first journeys to a future beyond the end of humanity. In fact, this novel takes the reader farther than likely the original author intended. Stableford has had a long-time love affair with the 'scientific romance,' and truly understands how far the genre can carry the reader.

Brian Stableford is my intellectual hero, and of all the writers alive today, he retains the scholarship, the breadth of vision, and the passion to have attempted this project. Fowler Wright, had in his mind to complete his epic scifi masterpiece which was started back in 1925 with 'The Amphibians' was a daunting task.
